How to pack a hiking backpack

A properly packed backpack has many advantages. Proper weight distribution will allow your body to perform more efficiently thereby reducing fatigue. Another advantage is that you will know where everything is and avoid unpacking half your backpack to find that one thing that should have been right at the top. But what is the right way to pack a backpack? Let’s have a look.

There are four basic things to remember when packing your backpack:

  1. Heavy items should be closest to your spine.
  2. Lighter items should be furthest from your spine.
  3. Less frequently used items like your sleeping bag should be packed in the bottom of your backpack.
  4. More frequently used items like your map, compass and snacks should be towards the top within easy reach.

Tip: Tighten compression straps to limit load shifting.
